Medical Assistant
Full-time, Benefit Eligible
Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm and includes evening weekend or holiday rotations
Pediatrics department
Working in close partnership with a provider(s), the medical assistant assists and directs care of patients in a practice. Their primary function is to manage efficient patient flow and to be available to assist providers as needed. The Medical Assistant is responsible for various clinical skills appropriate to training and scope for the maintenance and control of non-pharmaceutical supplies and equipment and for assigned support activities. The Medical Assistant assumes a range of patient care responsibilities dealing with the physical and emotional aspects of assigned clients’ ages 0 to greater than 100 years. Provides excellent customer service to patients, health center staff and outside agencies. Provides quality support and care to patients by working as a multidisciplinary care team member across the health center.
Schedule: Mon-Fri, 8AM-5PM and includes evening, weekend and holiday rotations
Responsibilities - Prepares for assigned clinics and ensures all test results and instruments are available per department protocol. Be available to assist with their assigned providers.
- Communicate with them throughout the session
- Accurately performs the following as indicated :
- Vital signs, O2 sat, pain scale (0-10)
- Weights, height, LMP
- Spirometry
- Peak flow meters.
- Use of Oxygen equipment
- Point-of-care testing
- Cleans and wraps instruments for sterilization
- Follows proper sterilization protocols as indicated
- Other clinical tasks appropriate to the department assignment
- Responsible for facilitating effective team and patient communication throughout the visit
- Manages efficient patient flow per departmental requirements and supports providers and team in overall coordination and delivery of care.
- Actively participates in patient visits per departmental protocol including but not limited to: rooming patients, obtaining chief complaints, addressing BPAs, and obtaining pertinent history.
- All documentation should be complete and done in an efficient and timely manner.
- Proficient in the use of the electronic medical record (Epic) as it pertains to department-based workflows and guidelines
- Interacts with patients and other staff in a professional and respectful manner, which reflects the needs and concerns of patients and staff.
- Consistently provides excellent customer service and makes patients feel welcome.

- Monitors or chaperones exams as appropriate assists in procedures or treatments as requested by providers.
- Assists with patient ambulating and transfers to/from chair, stretchers and exam table.
- Assists with undressing, gowning and dressing as needed.
- Stocks exam rooms and utility rooms daily with medical supplies and forms needed.
- Cleans exam rooms and equipment daily and as needed.
- Proficient and accurate use of current EBNHC electronic applications
- Promotes a sense of teamwork through demonstration of self-direction and self-motivation.
- Solves problems independently and knows when to seek consultation
- Assists with forms, letters, and other clinical paperwork as directed. Makes sure that all clinical paperwork is properly labeled.
- Answers telephones, and calls patients as requested by practice staff.
- Performs activities such as booking/canceling/confirming appointments, processing outside referrals, and filing.
- Escorts patients to various departments as seen necessary.
- Reports delays in supply orders, safety and equipment problems, and malfunctioning or missing equipment.
- Follows established departmental policies and procedures for environmental safety and infection control.
- Participates in required departmental activities and meetings.
- Understand the organizational structure of the department and unit routine
- Makes optimal use of standby time
- Maintains all pertinent competencies
- Maintains excellent punctuality and attendance
- Ensure that any exam room solutions supplies are dated when opened and disposed of promptly when expired. Responsible for ensuring exam rooms are kept clean and fully stocked with both medical and clerical supplies. Assuring medical supplies are up to date. Checks for expiration dates as scheduled.
- Adheres to all EBNHC and departmental policies and procedures and Standard Precautions.
- Perform other related duties.
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Graduation from a Certified Medical Assistant Program
- BCLS certification (per department policy).
- Bilingual skills preferred (English/Spanish)
EXPERIENCE: - Entry-level Medical Assistants encouraged to apply!
- Two years as a Medical Assistant, with six months at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. Must work at least .8 FTE regularly scheduled hours.
SKILLS/ABILITIES: Meets medical assistant skill level with addition of demonstrated leadership ability.
