Summary: This position will work with units across campus to identify, develop, and submit grant and
contract proposals. Principle tasks include working with Principal Investigators in searching for grant and contract funding sources,
helping to write and edit proposals, and advising on the submission process.
Duties &
Responsibilities: Leads the University's efforts to promote and increase external program and research
funding. Actively searches for, prepares and writes highly competitive, technical and/or complex grant
proposals. Researches, identifies and distributes potential funding opportunities to faculty staff and administration to support
institutional priorities. Revises and edits drafts provided by PIs, including executive summaries, research plans, facilities, and
organizational resources. Meets proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing,
review, and approval. Examines with the PI/team declined proposals (upon request), to review the feedback provided by the granting
agency to identify proposal's strengths, weaknesses, and other potential items for improvement and potential re-submission in the following
year's funding cycle. Provides training to faculty and staff on proposal development, grant writing strategies, impact planning,
and current funding trends. Develops targeted grant writing resources (e.g., tips for approaching specific programs, for getting
started, relevant funder language to note, etc.) for specific programs and agencies as directed. Coordinates with the Office of
Research and Sponsored Programs staff to create, update and maintain templates, boilerplate information and online resources that support
proposal development and submission processes. Provides consultation services to potential PIs on research strategies, tactics,
tools, and best practices for the development of grants for submission, as requested. Seeks out and cultivates effective
relationships with grantors, faculty, staff, community stakeholders, and other contributors. The Grant Writer and Editor should assist the
Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation in the development of a University Grants Team - an interdisciplinary, collaborative
team comprised of campus members and leadership - whose goal is to increase the level of grant-funded research across
campus. Develops and maintains grant proposal tracking system and their life cycle including upcoming grant
opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree.
Minimum of three years' experience in
grant writing.
Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree.
Knowledge, Skills &
Abilities: Excellent team coordination skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively with internal/external
stakeholders.
Familiarity with federal compliance regulations for grant-funded projects.
Strong ability to think critically
and work in an interdisciplinary environment.
Extensive knowledge of grant application processes, scoring criteria and funding
cycles.
Strong research skills with willingness and ability to communicate highly complex information in a clear, precise, and
compelling way.
Excellent organizational skills, ability to work in a complex fast-paced and high-profile environment with short
deadlines, competing priorities and intense pressure to perform.
Demonstrated ability to use federal electronic proposal routing
systems.
Excellent skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel) or related software, and with databases and data
visualization software such as Tableau.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
