Civilian Investigator

Posting Summary:As a University Investigator, the incumbent will assess, investigate, analyze, and provide oral and written reports to relevant bodies on incidents that occur under a variety of university policies and procedures, including its Code of Student Conduct and Human Resources policies. May be called upon to collaboratively investigate discrimination and harassment, including Title IX, and criminal matters on occasion. Provide investigative support to police services detectives and officers. Partner with General Counsel, Human Resources, Police Services and Student Affairs staff to ensure compliance with relevant state and federal laws and University policies. Work under the direction of the Chief Safety & Compliance Officer and is responsible to the Chief Human Resources Officer, Executive Director of Equal Opportunity, Chief of Police, Director of Student Life, and other senior university leaders as facts and circumstances of the investigation require. The scope of work and processes will rely on the personnel and the area responsible for case administration.
Minimum Qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience):-Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and five or more years of experience conducting formal investigations.
-Knowledge and understanding of or ability to quickly learn investigative procedures, interviewing, due process, state and federal laws, regulations and university policies and procedures.
Strong writing skills.
-Demonstrated skills in interviewing in an investigative environment.
-Effective communication, listening and interpersonal skills.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a high level of critical thinking and analysis. -Ability to work effectively with a wide range of University students, UVM personnel, and affiliates across multiple disciplines, including providing support in a neutral and unbiased manner.
-Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations professionally and impartially and showcase excellent judgment for prioritization.
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice issues, and fostering a collaborative, multicultural environment.
-Experience in employment, civil rights, law enforcement or social services setting.
-Working knowledge of non-discrimination law, including Title IX, Title VI, Title VII, and the ADA.
-Experience investigating complaints of and working with victims of discrimination, harassment, bias, and sexual misconduct highly desired., including the ability to quickly build rapport and the ability to speak in front of groups and interact effectively in a university setting.
-Demonstrated conflict management and mediation skills.
-Experience working in a unionized environment with employees represented by a collective bargaining agreement.

Special Conditions:Non-standard work hours required, Occasional evening and/or weekends required (if non-exempt position, may result in overtime), This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule with an option to split time between campus and elsewhere, in accordance with the university telecommuting policy, Background Check required for this position
