DESCRIPTION

Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced bioinformatics programming professional with a broad understanding of computational algorithms; identifies and resolves a wide range of issues / software bugs. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Operates independently.

NIH has created a Common Fund Data EcoSystem, which serves as the nucleus for a collection of Common Fund Projects that generatelarge volumes of disparate data. The Data Resource Center, DRC (jointly maintained by UC San Diego and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine Teams) operates the DRC. This requires a team of programmers/software engineers/computational biologists who can develop, maintain and support the DRC. This position is seeking a software engineer/computational biologist who has background in biological data maintenance and analysis. This individual will apply skills as a seasoned, experienced software professional with a full understanding of software practices, community standards and relevant policies and procedures to medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. This individual will have demonstrated competency in selecting tools, methods and techniques to obtain results from Common Fund data.

The incumbent will be involved in the development of server/OS/desktop/mobile applications and services, including researching, designing, developing specifications, writing, modifying, testing, debugging, troubleshooting, and maintaining source code. Direct or related involvement in designing databases, user interfaces, integration to other systems/applications, content, or multimedia processes will be a requirement. Work encompasses analysis and design to post-production processes, quality assurance, maintenance, and documentation.

Additionally, this individual will engage in developing and utilizing computational tools and systems to analyze and interpret biological or other research data. The individual will also utilize and develop algorithms, computational techniques, and statistical methodologies and will assist in the design of new experiments, and implement end-user needs in database searching and integration. They will maintain the computational infrastructure and tracks the flow of data for large-scale studies and will provide web-based bioinformatics and access to public and proprietary databases.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in biological science, computational / programming, or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics methods, applications programming, web development and data structures.

  • Thorough knowledge of bioinformatics programming design, modification and implementation.

  • Understanding of relational databases, web interfaces, and operating systems.

  • Strong project management skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of modern biology and applicable field of research.

  • Communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical personnel in multiple fields of expertise and at various levels in the organization.

  • Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Ability to interface with management on a regular basis.

  • Self-motivated, work independently or as part of a team, able to learn quickly, meet deadlines and demonstrate problem solving skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of web, application and data security concepts and methods.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand functional needs and how systems can support those needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop conversion and system implementation plans.

  • Demonstrated experience in applications including web-based query systems, workflow implementations and interface development. Should have the knowledge of handling private and confidential information and developing controlled access to data resources.

  • Advanced skills associated with software design, modification, implementation and deployment, including object-oriented programming concepts. Experience in Workbench and Query Systems design is required.
